I was thinking about Larry Breed yesterday and Googled his name only to discover that he had passed away in May, which made me very sad. We had been friends seventy years ago in Alexandria, VA, when we were in school. Also we were in Boy Scouts together and went to the Beverly Hills Community Church where his mother played the organ. Occasionally his mother would drive me home from church in her woodie station wagon. At the time I didn’t know it was called this but I knew there was no other car in the neighborhood like it. On Boy Scout camping trips and at summer camp we would share a tent whenever we had a chance. We went to the same elementary school and the same eighth grade school – Jefferson School. When we were in eighth grade we were given a short IQ test. The teacher was so amazed at his IQ score that she blurted it out to the whole class. After eighth grade Larry went to Sidwell Friends in D. C. and I went on to St. Stephens. At some point his father’s assignment at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory came to an end and the family moved back to California and I lost trace of Larry, I am sorry to say.
Larry was also a devoted blood donor, and convinced me to do the same. Over 260 donations later, I always remember and thank him. He also made a wonderful spinach-tofu quiche, and his recipe is treasured in my family. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.
