Richard “Scott” Carey passed away unexpectedly from heart failure on February 1, 2022. He survived two open-heart surgeries in his lifetime. He was 73 years old. He passed away in Kingston, New York after he and his wife relocated there in October 2021. Scott was born in Annapolis, Maryland on October 4, 1948 to Richard and Darrell Carey. The family settled in Palo Alto in 1959. Scott attended Garland Elementary School, Jordan Junior High School and Palo Alto High School, graduating in 1966. During those years Scott was active in community theater, golf club, glee club and his church youth group. He went to UC Berkeley for his B.A. in History and received his J.D. at Golden Gate University. While at Cal, Scott enjoyed Bear basketball games and concerts at The Greek and Zellerbach Auditorium. He ushered at The Orpheum Theater in San Francisco for the 1969 Broadway musical “Hair” and saw the show dozens of times.

Scott’s love of musical theater never diminished and he and his wife, Lynnette Morton Carey, supported their son, Noel Carey, in his many theater performances. They both volunteered their time to countless school plays and community theater performances. Scott helped paint sets for PYT in Mountain View. This was just a reflection of his lifelong career as an excellent housepainter. His business was called Scott Carey Painting. Scott was proud of Noel’s accomplishments as an artist, singer/dancer, writer and his career as a composer/lyricist in New York City.

Scott enjoyed his weekly “Frisball” game with his friends at Roble Field for 40 years! He was passionate about skiing and was a big Grateful Dead fan, always seeking them in concert. Scott was a member of The First Congregational Church of Palo Alto, where he devoted his painting skills. He helped and sang in many church musicals where he was known as the “Popsicle Guy” for his snack contributions. He was the assistant leader for the middle school and high school youth groups, joining the youth on their annual Sierra Service Project trips, as well.

Scott is survived by his wife, Lynnette Morton Carey, son Noel Scott Carey and siblings Chris, Ann (Sue), Chuck, Kate and Jean. His older brother, Michael, and his parents Richard and Darrell Carey, preceded him in death.
