Matthew Francis Bacolini, age 37, passed away on December 2, 2022 after losing his battle with addiction.
Matt was born in Redwood City, California on October 4, 1985, the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. This was a fitting birthday for Matt as he had a fondness for all animals, especially dogs. Matt’s love of dogs remained a constant throughout his life.
As a child, Matt had a gentle way about him that became an enduring virtue. He was known for his kindness and athleticism. He attended St. Raymond School in Menlo Park from kindergarten through 8th grade where he excelled in all sports, particularly swimming and water polo. His years at St. Raymond gave him the gift of lifelong friends.
Matt continued his water polo endeavors in high school and graduated from Saint Francis High School in 2004. After high school, he worked in construction. After graduating from Project 90 in San Mateo, Matt worked at the rehab for years before relocating to Florida. There he lived at and worked for Project Hope, fundraising for their program. He had also recently been volunteering at the Presbyterian Church Café in Celebration, Florida.
Above all, Matt loved and cherished his family especially his beloved nephews and niece, Logan and Layla and Tripp. Always the sports fan, the Giants and 49ers remained his favorite teams while living in Florida and he was able to cheer on the 49ers at the 2020 Super Bowl.
Matt’s gentle and kind soul always shone through his gigantic, charming smile. And he was generous in sharing that contagious smile with all those he met. He was a sensitive man with a heart of gold and a keen sense of humor. In his short time here, he touched many people deeply. Matt was an inspiration to many others struggling with addiction and was loved by all who knew him. As heartbreaking as it is to say goodbye, Matt leaves us with memories of happy times spent with an amazing young man.
Matt is survived by his Dad, Vince (Marie); his Mom, Kathy; his sisters, Michelle Scaduto (Chris) and Lindsey; his nephew and niece, Logan and Layla Scaduto; his stepsister, Marissa Culver, and stepnephew Tripp; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, and many friends.
Matt was a close friend of mine in junior high. I have many memories of great times spent playing at the Bacolini household. I’m so sad to hear of his passing. I’ll keep him in my memory, and I send his family my best wishes. Sincerely, Charlie
