Richard Allen Runkel
Aug. 21, 1932-Feb. 8, 2026
Palo Alto, California

Richard Runkel, age 93, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on February 8, 2026. Richard lived a long and full life, defined by his resilience, sense of responsibility, and a devotion to his family.

Born and raised in Arcadia, Wisconsin, to Allen and Vera Runkel, Richard grew up in a lively household as one of six children. His youth was filled with German and Irish heritage and a love for sports, including basketball, baseball, golf, and tennis.

Richard proudly served in the United States Navy for four years during the Korean War aboard the USS Frank E. Evans. Upon his discharge, he returned to Arcadia to court the love of his life, Phyllis Joyce Schlesser. They were married on August 18, 1956, beginning a 69-year journey of love and adventure.

After earning his PhD from the University of Wisconsin, Richard and Phyllis embarked on a legendary move across the country. With six children packed into a red-and-white VW van, they relocated to Palo Alto, California. Richard joined Syntex, where he worked until his retirement. He was instrumental in developing numerous oral dosage formulations, most notably the life-changing medication known today as Aleve.

Richard loved spending time with his family. He was a master of the Great American Road Trip, creating indelible memories for his children. Whether leading a month-long camping trek in a Lincoln Continental, navigating Baja in the Travelall, or hosting the annual houseboat trip on Lake Shasta for his kids and grandkids.

Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Phyllis; his children: Dave (Karla), Tom (Theresa), Ann Miranda (Dennis), Paul, Mary Chacon (Mike), and Dicky (Anne); 10 grandchildren: Will, Justine, John, Kathleen, Jennifer, Melissa, Frank, Jillian, Chasen, and Peyton; and three great-grandchildren: Max, Richie, and Essie.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to his wonderful caregivers, Margret and Rose, for their compassionate support.
