She was class valedictorian of Barringer High School in Newark, New Jersey. Maria went on to graduate with honors from Smith College. She pursued a Master’s Degree in zoology from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, followed by studies at the Woman’s Medical College of Philadelphia and the University of Michigan Medical School, where she earned her M.D. with a specialization in surgery. Throughout her career, she taught, conducted research, and led surgery at prominent medical centers in Michigan, Colorado, Maryland, and California, including Johns Hopkins, Stanford, and Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose.
