Luther Austen Heydon
April 15, 1939-Jan. 3, 2024
Portola Valley, CA

In loving memory of Luther Austen Heydon, Jr.. born in Hackensack, NJ, son of Dr. Luther A. and Kathleen Lea Heydon. Austen was a remarkable man who filled his life with kindness, adventure, learning and service.

Before graduating from high school, Austen became an Eagle Scout, (the highest Boy Scout award). He graduated from Lehigh University in 1961 and Stanford University in 1963. Austen was then commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy and assigned to San Diego as a computer specialist. Following his discharge, he took his savings and decided to explore Europe. He wandered from country to country as the weather dictated, and met fellow travelers along the way.

Once his money ran out, Austen returned to the U.S. and joined IBM where he had a successful career (including as an advisor in Saigon during the Vietnam war). He specialized in software systems. After retirement he enjoyed a six year stint with Siemens; taught ISO 9000 classes; became a Notary Public and did considerable volunteer work. Austen was a remarkably kind and outgoing man who developed friendships everywhere he went.

Personal life brought joy with an adventurous marriage and enduring love for his wife Barbara. Together, Austen and Barbara created a loving home in Ladera, CA adopting two wonderful children, Angela and Patrick who brought immense joy to their lives. While with IBM, the family lived for awhile in Rome, Italy. This added a rich cultural dimension and created cherished memories (and return visits).

Austen is survived by his wife Barbara, his children, Angela and Patrick, his sister, Mary Lea Burden and several nieces and nephews. He leaves a legacy of love, resilience and the warmth of family.

If able, please consider a donation in Austen's memory to the Second Harvest of Silicon Valley - an organization that was close to his heart.
