Lloyd Murray

Our beloved Dad and Grampa, Lloyd, has passed away at age 96, after a brief illness. He was predeceased by his beautiful wife, Yvonne. His daughters, Melinda, Becky, and Kim, and his large family of grandchildren and great grandchildren will treasure every moment and memory we have of our 'Grampa.'

Lloyd's life revolved around his love of family. He was born in Canada, but mainly grew up in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. He liked to tell stories about fishing in the Algonquin wilds with his British grandfather, who was a minister and a painter. But much of his childhood was also spent at the Neighborhood Club in Grosse Pointe. During the Great Depression and WWII, the Neighborhood Club was the hub of the community, holding ball games, dances, flower shows, and baking contests. And Lloyd accompanied his English mom, Isabella, whom he adored, to many of the events. The Neighborhood Club was also a terrific sports center, where the Detroit Lions would sometimes practice. Lloyd became a superb athlete. He was a high-ranked junior tennis player, a collegiate golfer, and eventually played baseball for the Army.

Lloyd's gracious parents often took in struggling family members during the Depression, as well as homesick British soldiers during the war, and his mom plumped everyone up with Yorkshire Pudding. Lloyd thought it was marvelous, getting to tag along with these young heroes.

When Lloyd met and married Yvonne, they moved to Palo Alto (Yvonne was an early Paly grad before attending Berkeley) and they quickly created the same loving and welcoming home that Lloyd had grown up in. They were devoted to their daughters. And Lloyd's and Yvonne's doors were always open to family, friends, and neighbors. Folks could stop by any day for a laugh, a hug, a cocktail, or just joyful camaraderie.

Lloyd and Yvonne earned numerous trophies as a mixed-doubles tennis team on the seniors circuit. Their home base was Foothill Club, though Rinconada Park was another favorite spot for the family to play. Lloyd was such a natural, graceful athlete. And, even more valuable, he always brought joy and laughter into the game, especially for kids.

Lloyd had a very successful career as a Realtor with Cornish & Carey and sold many of Palo Alto's loveliest homes. He could be seen driving through town in his cherished 1970 Red Cutlass Convertible, which he never parted with.

Lloyd and Yvonne were such devoted and loving parents and grandparents. They imparted so much wisdom and humor and kindness into everyone's life. They were absolutely adored by their kids, grandkids, and great grandkids and they will be at the center of our hearts forever.
