Kathryn Gail Fenton Brown died peacefully at home in Cupertino, CA, on July 12, 2026, surrounded by her family, following an unexpected diagnosis and a swift subsequent decline. She was 78 years old.

Kathy was born on April 2, 1948, in Lafayette, Indiana, the second-born and oldest daughter in a family of nine children. She went on to earn her BSN, MSN, and MBA at the University of San Francisco, pioneering one of the country's early programs combining nursing with business and hospital administration; a combination that would come to define her career.

Kathy married Michael Collins Brown and began her nursing career at the bedside at St. Mary’s in San Francisco, eventually working as an ICU and CCU nurse at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View even as she raised four children. She went on to hold leadership roles at Stanford Hospital and Clinics and Kaiser Permanente, eventually serving as Director of Quality, Accreditation, and Licensing at Kaiser Permanente Redwood City, where she helped build programs that transformed patient care, including the hospital's renowned stroke center. In this very place, she was exquisitely cared for during her final days. She later worked as an independent healthcare consultant, preparing hospital systems across California for state and federal surveys and leading efforts to reduce clinical variation and improve patient safety.

Kathy's commitment to service extended well beyond her career. She served on the University of San Francisco Nursing and Health Professions Alumni Advisory Board, as Fund Treasurer and volunteer for St. Vincent de Paul's homeless outreach in Redwood City, as a tutor with the St. Francis Youth Club in East Palo Alto, and as a member of the American Red Cross Disaster Action Team. After moving to the Forum at Rancho San Antonio in 2020, she became president of the community's RSI Board of Directors, where, among many other contributions, she was in the midst of establishing the community's first hospice room at the time of her death.

A devout Roman Catholic, Kathy drew deeply on her faith throughout her life and made several trips to Lourdes as a volunteer with the Order of Malta in recent years. She was fiercely independent, endlessly busy, and known by just about everyone she met as someone who simply never stopped serving others.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Hilda Claire Fenton and Thomas Aquinas Fenton, and by her husband of 52 years, Michael Collins Brown, who died in 2021. She is survived by her daughters, Becky Brown of Ashland, OR, and Molly Brown of Mindo, Ecuador, and her sons, Mike Brown of Ft. Collins, CO, and Tom Brown of Ladera, CA. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and by eight siblings and their families.

Kathy leaves behind a large, hilarious, and loving family that can’t quite imagine a world without her planning the next reunion or running the next board meeting. Her remarkable legacy will be carried forward by dozens of family members, hundreds of neighbors and friends, and former colleagues and patients whose lives she touched.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at St. Simon Catholic Church in Los Altos, CA.
