George Nelson Andrews
Feb. 25, 1931-June 16, 2026
Menlo Park, San Mateo

Submitted by Paul Lechich

George Nelson Andrews was born in Redwood City on February 25, 1931, and died on June 16, 2026, at the age of 95. He spent his long career as a lineman with the Bell System, in the years when AT&T was the telephone. It was outdoor work, climbing poles in whatever weather the day handed him so that other people's calls went through. The network of that era was built and kept running by men like George, one span of wire at a time. Away from the job he was a man of iron and engines. Trains were his lifelong passion, and he followed it seriously, traveling widely on railroad trips and visiting museums across the country. Military vehicles ran a close second. He owned a Model T Ford and a former Army Jeep with its trailer. He was a member of the Menlo Park Historical Society. He stayed fit and active into his ninety-fifth year, driving his own pickup out to see his friends until just a few months before his passing — which says as much about the friendships as it does about the driving. He married Frances in 1956. They were together six weeks short of seventy years — a marriage that would have reached its seventieth anniversary this July. George is survived by Frances; his son, Bill; and his three daughters, Dorothy, Evelyn, and Barbara.
